The problem
Intervention: None - this is an observational study documenting prevalence and associations, not an intervention evaluation
Who it was tested with: 80 adult survivors of FGM/C (ages 20-62, mean 37.4 years) receiving care at a specialized centre for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual violence in New York City.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A retrospective chart-review of electronic medical records was conducted for all consenting adult patients who had FGM/C and had an intake visit between January 16, 2014 and March 6, 2020." This is an observational study documenting the prevalence of co-occurring abuses and their associations with psychiatric outcomes, rather than evaluating an intervention to prevent or treat FGM/C or its effects.
Retrospective design limits causal inference; single-site study with specialized population may not generalize; no comparison group; no intervention tested.
