The problem
Intervention: None - this is an observational study examining the relationship between existing child labor exposure and mental health outcomes
Who it was tested with: 470 South Sudanese adolescents aged 13-17 in Adjumani and Kiryandongo refugee settlements, Uganda.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Surveys were conducted in Adjumani and Kiryandongo refugee settlements, Uganda, with 470 adolescents between 13 and 17 interviewed between December 2014-February 2015. Logistic regression models assessed the association of child labor and mental health." The study measured prevalence and associations between child labor and mental health in a defined population at one point in time without an intervention or comparison group.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference. No randomized or quasi-experimental comparison group. Self-reported data on sensitive topics. No information on duration or intensity of child labor exposure.
