The problem
Intervention: None tested; this is an observational study examining associations between loneliness, emotional/behavioral problems and suicidal ideation
Who it was tested with: 2,190 Chinese adolescents from junior and senior high schools in Taizhou.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Structural equation modeling was used to construct complete longitudinal path models" with data collected at three time points. This longitudinal design with modeling of pathways over time meets the EXPERIMENTAL tier as a non-randomized but rigorous temporal analysis design.
This is an observational longitudinal study, not an intervention trial. It identifies associations and pathways but cannot determine whether interventions targeting these factors would reduce suicidal ideation.
