The problem
Intervention: None – this is an observational study examining associations between exposure to OCSV and health outcomes
Who it was tested with: 3,500 Australians aged 16-24 years from a nationally representative sample.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This study analyzed data from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS), a nationally representative cross-sectional survey... Logistic regression examined associations between online child sexual victimization and health risk behaviours and mental disorders." This is observational research examining correlations rather than testing an intervention; causality cannot be determined from the cross-sectional design.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; cannot determine whether OCSV causes mental health problems or whether vulnerable youth are more exposed to OCSV; unmeasured confounders may explain associations.
