The problem
Intervention: None evaluated; this is an observational study comparing children born to adolescent mothers with those born to older mothers
Who it was tested with: 12,182 children aged 0–12 years from India, comparing those born to mothers aged ≤19 years with those born to older mothers.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"employed regression and propensity score matching analysis to compare the following growth indicators of children born to adolescent mothers (ages 19 years or below) with those born to older mothers." The study uses propensity score matching, a quasi-experimental method that reduces bias in observational data by matching children across comparison groups on observable characteristics, making it stronger than simple pre-post designs.
Observational study with potential unmeasured confounding; cannot determine causal mechanisms; the comparison is retrospective and may be affected by recall bias or selective attrition in the survey panels.
