The problem
Intervention: None; this is an observational study examining associations in population register data
Who it was tested with: 1,017,072 Finnish children with and without parental incarceration history.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using Finnish total population register data (N = 1,017,072), we studied the association between parental incarceration and violent victimization in childhood and adolescence...We conducted population-level and stratified Cox regression analyses and estimated cumulative incidence from Kaplan-Meier analysis." This observational study documents associations but cannot definitively prove that parental incarceration causes violent victimization risk.
Observational design cannot establish causation. Does not control for or discuss confounding factors. Does not explain mechanisms or identify protective factors. Cannot determine whether association reflects direct effects of incarceration or related circumstances.
