The problem
Intervention: None; this is an observational comparative study of the effects of FGM/C
Who it was tested with: 300 circumcised and 300 uncircumcised married women attending health centers in Mahabad, Iran.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted in 2024 involving 300 circumcised and 300 uncircumcised married women visiting health centers in Mahabad, Iran. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Sexual Satisfaction Scale for Women (SSSW), which assesses various components of sexual satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including independent t-tests and chi-square tests." This design allows comparison between groups but cannot establish causal mechanisms; however, the consistent and significant differences across multiple components strengthen the evidence that FGM/C is associated with reduced sexual satisfaction.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference. Single geographic location (Mahabad, Iran) and focus on Kurdish population limits broader applicability. Study does not control for confounding factors such as relationship quality, communication patterns, or cultural attitudes that may independently affect satisfaction.
