The problem
Intervention: None tested; this is an observational study of mechanisms linking violence exposure to aggression
Who it was tested with: Israeli Jewish (N=451) and Palestinian (N=600) youth in three age cohorts (8, 11, 14 years old) and their parents.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"we collected four waves of data from Israeli Jewish (N=451 at Wave 1) and Palestinian (N=600 at Wave 1) youths (three age cohorts: 8, 11, and 14 years old) and their parents." This four-wave prospective design tracks the same individuals over time, providing stronger evidence than cross-sectional data for the causal pathway, though without a randomised comparison group it remains observational.
No intervention was tested; this is a mechanistic study. The design is observational rather than experimental, so causation cannot be definitively established. Findings are context-specific to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
