The problem
Intervention: None tested; this is an observational study identifying predictors of healthcare provider support for FGM/C to inform future education interventions
Who it was tested with: 385 healthcare providers (gynaecologists and obstetricians) working in the Ministry of Health in Asyut Governorate, Upper Egypt.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 HCPs working in the gynaecology and obstetrics specialty for the Egyptian Ministry of Health in the Asyut Governorate. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire that assessed personal characteristics, HCPs training in and knowledge of FGM/C, the HCPs' attitudes towards the practice of FGM/C, as well as their involvement in the practice (medicalized FGM/C), FGM/C in their own family and the decision to support FGM/C for girls when consulted." This is descriptive research identifying risk factors for provider support rather than evaluating an intervention.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Single governorate limits generalizability. Self-reported data may be subject to social desirability bias. No comparison group or intervention tested.
