The problem
Intervention: None evaluated; this is an observational analysis of associations
Who it was tested with: 12,888 Kenyan women aged 15-49 years from the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (nationally representative sample).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This study utilized the most recent 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), a large scale and nationally representative dataset. A total of 12,888 participants (Mage = 32.35 years; SD = 7.96) were included in the final analysis. Multinomial regression models revealed that the likelihood of experiencing...IPV was 25% higher... among Kenyan women who married before the age of 18 years." The study demonstrates a strong statistical association between child marriage and intimate partner violence using a large nationally representative sample with appropriate statistical methods, but cannot establish causality due to its observational design.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; cannot determine if child marriage causes violence or if confounding factors explain both. Relies on self-reported data which may underestimate violence prevalence. No examination of potential mediating or moderating factors.
