The problem
Intervention: No intervention was tested; this is an observational study examining the association between maternal chronic energy malnutrition and child stunting
Who it was tested with: 207 children aged 6-23 months and their mothers in Srikamulyan village, Karawang Regency, Indonesia.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The number of samples was 207 children aged 6-23 months... Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis." The study documents an association between maternal malnutrition and child stunting but cannot determine causality or test whether any intervention reduces stunting.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Maternal nutritional status during pregnancy was assessed retrospectively through recall, introducing potential measurement error. No comparison of intervention versus control.
