The problem
Intervention: No intervention was tested; this is an observational study examining natural pathways between ACEs, brain structure/function, and behavior
Who it was tested with: 9,796 youths aged 9-13 years from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using sparse canonical correlation analysis, we identified two distinct patterns... Longitudinal cross-lagged panel models further demonstrated that parental psychiatric conditions, particularly depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, predicted child psychiatric symptoms two years later." This demonstrates a longitudinal design with temporal precedence, meeting experimental tier criteria, though the observational nature means causality cannot be fully established.
Observational design cannot determine causality. Study includes multiple comparisons across many variables (67 ACE variables, 30 behavioral outcomes). Generalizability limited to ABCD study cohort. Mechanisms of genetic moderation not fully specified.
