The problem
Intervention: No intervention was tested; this is an observational study examining natural associations
Who it was tested with: Mother-child pairs (n=1,613) from the Birth to Twenty Plus Cohort in Soweto, Johannesburg, followed at ages 13, 17, and 22 years.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The study included a longitudinal sample of mother-daughter and mother-son pairs from the Birth to Twenty Plus Cohort (N = 1,613), using data collected at 13, 17, and 22 years. Relationships between maternal factors and offspring's WLA were assessed using both logistic regression and structural equation modeling." The study documents associations over time but cannot establish causation or interventions, placing it in the practitioner evidence tier.
This is an observational study without intervention or comparison groups, limiting causal inference. The lack of association between maternal factors and daughters' behavior prevents understanding of what actually drives daughters' weight loss attempts.
