The problem
Intervention: No intervention was tested; this is an observational longitudinal study examining whether early imitation predicts later adaptive behavior
Who it was tested with: 724 children from a general population birth cohort in Japan (Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We analyzed data from the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study), a prospective birth cohort of children in Japan (n = 724). Adaptive behavior at 8 years of age was assessed using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Second Edition (VABS-II)... Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted for each domain-level score of the VABS-II."; This is a longitudinal population-based cohort study with prospective measurement of the predictor and outcome variables, making it the strongest observational design available.
Observational study cannot determine causality. Sample is from Japan and may not be representative of other populations. No information provided on attrition rates or loss to follow-up.
