The problem
Intervention: This is an observational study examining the relationship between FGM status and sexual risk behaviors; no intervention was tested
Who it was tested with: 5,524 adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 years in Sierra Leone.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"a generalized estimation equation technique was employed, while controlling for socio-demographic characteristics" - This observational study design with statistical controls can demonstrate associations but cannot prove causal effects of FGM on sexual behaviors, making the evidence inconclusive about intervention effectiveness.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. The study cannot determine whether FGM directly causes these behaviors or whether other factors associated with FGM prevalence explain the associations observed.
