The problem
Intervention: Introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in 2017 in select sites and nationwide rollout of 10-valent PCV (PCV10-SII) in 2021
Who it was tested with: Hospitalised children aged 1-59 months with suspected meningitis in 32 hospitals across 19 Indian states.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Cases were categorised based on PCV implementation in their district of residence on their admission date as pre-PCV (before rollout of PCV10-SII/PCV13), early-PCV (<1 year since rollout), or post-PCV (≥1 year since rollout) group." This before-and-after comparison demonstrates preliminary vaccine impact through the decline in both overall pneumococcal meningitis cases and vaccine-covered serotypes.
Study is observational without a randomised comparison group. Only sentinel hospitals included, not nationwide coverage. The 2019-2022 timeframe provides limited long-term follow-up. Serotype data was available for only a subset of pneumococcal cases.
