The problem
Intervention: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV10 and PCV13)
Who it was tested with: Vietnamese children aged 2-59 months.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted a matched case-control study between February 2022 and January 2025 in southern Vietnam. Cases were children aged 2-59 months hospitalized with culture-confirmed IPD from normally sterile sites at three tertiary pediatric hospitals. Four age- and neighborhood-matched community controls were enrolled per case." The design uses matched controls to account for confounding by age and neighborhood, strengthening causal inference in a case-control framework.
Study conducted in southern Vietnam at tertiary hospitals only, may not represent mild cases or other regions; low overall vaccine coverage (37.5%) limits precision; matched case-control design cannot establish causation or assess population-level impact
