The problem
Intervention: Routine childhood immunisation programme (BCG, oral polio vaccine, pentavalent vaccine, and measles-containing vaccine) according to the national schedule
Who it was tested with: Children aged 10-23 months in three districts of Sierra Leone (Bombali, Tonkolili, Port Loko).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A three-stage cluster sampling method was followed to enrol children aged 10-23 months. Information regarding immunisation status was based on vaccination cards or caretaker's recall." This represents measurement of a defined population at a single point in time using documented and recalled data, which constitutes a PRE_POST tier design when compared to the stated 2019 baseline, though the study lacks a true comparison group or randomisation.
Immunisation status based on vaccination cards or caretaker recall, introducing potential recall bias. Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Survey limited to three districts and conducted only two months during the pandemic, with no comparison to matched unaffected period.
