The problem
Intervention: Vaccination programme delivery through healthcare and community-based sampling strategies
Who it was tested with: 1,080 children (aged under 24-36 months) born to 1,015 adolescent mothers (aged 15-19 years) in Eastern Cape, South Africa; 27.3% of mothers were HIV-positive.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Vaccination data were abstracted from 1013 home-based child health records (2017-2019). Coverage is reported for Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis 3rd dose (DTP3), under-1 vaccination among children over 12 months (n = 613) and measles 2nd dose (MCV2) among children over 24 months (n = 382)." This represents measurement of existing programme outcomes against defined targets, showing that routine vaccination delivery is not achieving adequate coverage or timeliness among this vulnerable population.
Observational design with no intervention or control group; data from health records only, which may underestimate or overestimate actual coverage; does not identify specific barriers or mechanisms; limited to one province in South Africa
