The problem
Intervention: Introduction of pentavalent oral rotavirus vaccine (Rotasiil) into national immunization program with assumed 98% coverage and 55% seroconversion
Who it was tested with: Children under five in Iran, simulated in urban and rural settings.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"An ABM was developed in NetLogo 6.4.0 to simulate rotavirus transmission among children under five in urban and rural settings... Each condition was run 1,000 times over one simulated year, and incidence rates and symptomatic days per child-year were calculated." The modelling approach with multiple runs and sensitivity testing provides a structured prediction framework, though model outputs require real-world validation.
The study is based entirely on computer simulation with no real-world validation. Actual effectiveness depends on achieving projected coverage and seroconversion rates. Rural sanitation assumptions may not reflect local conditions accurately. The model does not account for equity in vaccine distribution or implementation challenges.
