The problem
Intervention: Rotavirus vaccination
Who it was tested with: Children younger than 5 years globally, with particular reference to sub-Saharan Africa.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Models were used to estimate burden in data-sparse locations" and the study measured "Rotavirus-associated mortality and morbidity by country and year and averted deaths attributable to the rotavirus vaccine by country." The study compares disease burden before and after vaccine introduction globally, using modelled estimates to show the vaccine's impact on reducing rotavirus deaths.
This is a modelling study with uncertainty intervals; actual vaccine impact depends on coverage rates and implementation which vary by country and are not detailed in this abstract. The study does not evaluate vaccine efficacy under different delivery conditions or implementation fidelity.
