The problem
Intervention: Family-based economic empowerment intervention comprising a child development account, four microenterprise workshops, and 12 mentorship sessions
Who it was tested with: 702 adolescents living with HIV aged 10-16 in Uganda (mean age 12 years, 56% female).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This cluster-randomized controlled trial (2012-2018) recruited 702 ALWHIV aged 10-16 in Uganda... We randomized 39 clinics into the control (n = 344) or intervention group (n = 358)." The study used a randomized design with allocation at the clinic level (cluster randomization) and compared control and intervention groups over an extended follow-up period with multiple measurement timepoints, meeting the criteria for an experimental design.
Adherence measured by self-report only. Mediation mechanisms through which economic empowerment improves mental health not detailed. Generalizability limited to Ugandan context.
