The problem
Intervention: Youth development account combined with multiple family group intervention (YDA + MFG), or youth development account alone (YDA)
Who it was tested with: Adolescent girls and young women aged 14-17 enrolled in 47 secondary schools in Uganda (N=1,260; mean age 15.4).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Schools were randomized to either a youth development account intervention (YDA) [N = 16 schools], YDA plus a multiple family group intervention (YDA + MFG) [N = 15 schools], or bolstered standard of care (BSOC) [N = 16 schools]... We estimated the effect of each intervention (BSOC = referent) on three measures of psychosocial well-being... using multi-level linear mixed models for each outcome." The study uses a rigorous cluster RCT design with validated measurement scales and appropriate statistical modelling for clustered data.
The abstract does not provide effect sizes, confidence intervals, or p-values. Long-term follow-up beyond 12 months is not reported. The mechanisms through which the interventions work are not explored.
