The problem
Intervention: Suubi-Maka family economic empowerment intervention
Who it was tested with: AIDS-orphaned adolescents in 10 primary schools in southern Uganda (n=346; 179 intervention, 167 control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We used t-test and multi-level mixed effects models to examine the impact of Suubi-Maka on psychological and behavioral outcomes" and "Simple main effects comparisons of 12 months versus baseline within each condition indicate modest to significant declines." This RCT design compares the intervention to a control condition, but the lack of differential outcomes between groups indicates the intervention did not produce additional benefit beyond what the control group experienced.
The study found no meaningful difference between intervention and control groups, making it impossible to attribute observed improvements to the economic empowerment intervention. The reasons for similar improvements in both groups are not explained, limiting ability to understand what factors may have contributed to change.
