The problem
Intervention: School-based physical activity programmes lasting at least 8 weeks
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6 to 12 years in 40 studies, 21,793 participants in total.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Forty studies (39 randomized, 1 non-randomized) involving 21,793 participants met inclusion criteria." This shows the pooled evidence comes almost entirely from controlled trials with comparison groups, which supports the experimental tier.
Substantial heterogeneity, small psychosocial effect sizes, non-standardised measurement across studies, and exploratory subgroup analyses. The BMI result was not significant, and the abstract gives no detail on follow-up or on specific countries.
