The problem
Intervention: A 10-month school-based physical activity intervention (Active School study)
Who it was tested with: 435 students aged 9–10 years in five intervention schools and four control schools in Norway.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The Active School study was a ten-month cluster-randomized controlled trial." A randomised trial with control schools is an experimental design, and it found no significant self-regulation improvement.
Self-regulation was rated by teachers rather than directly measured. The abstract gives no detail on the intervention content or on how well it was delivered. Only one age group in one country was studied, and the fitness and maths relationships are correlational.
