The problem
Intervention: School-based physical activity promotion interventions with varying characteristics including curriculum integration, staff involvement, and tailoring
Who it was tested with: Prevocational adolescents (typically ages 12-16 in lower academic tracks) in school settings.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The search strategy assessed studies against inclusion criteria study design, study population, school setting, language, and construct. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed, and extractions were made of the physical activity (PA) level outcome measures and intervention characteristics regarding organizational, social, and content features. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the overall effect of the interventions on the PA level." This demonstrates a rigorous systematic review with meta-analysis combining multiple randomized and quasi-experimental studies with comparison groups, constituting the highest evidence tier.
Heterogeneity across 40 included studies; risk of bias assessed but not uniformly reported; focus limited to school settings; long-term sustainability of effects not examined; outcomes limited to physical activity levels rather than health or behavioural outcomes.
