The problem
Intervention: COVID-19 vaccination (BNT162b2 and CoronaVac)
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents aged less than 18 years; BNT162b2 tested in adolescents aged 12-15 years; CoronaVac tested with 1.5 μg and 3 μg doses.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted a systematic review of published studies and ongoing clinical studies related to the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine in children or adolescents (aged < 18 years)... The RCTs showed that the immune response to BNT162b2 in adolescents aged 12-15 years was non-inferior to that in young people aged 16-25 years... The efficacy of BNT162b2 was 100% (95% CI: 75.3 to 100), based on one RCT." This is a systematic review of RCTs and observational studies examining vaccine safety and efficacy through immunogenicity and clinical outcomes in children and adolescents.
Only eight published studies included with small sample sizes and limited study designs; data on efficacy based primarily on immunogenicity measures and one RCT; lack of long-term follow-up data; limited information on safety outcomes across different age groups within children and adolescents.
