The problem
Intervention: COVID-19 vaccination (inactivated, mRNA, and adenovirus vector vaccines) with single-dose or two-dose regimens, with or without booster doses
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents aged 3-17 years across six randomized controlled trials.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A comprehensive search for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from inception to November 9, 2021. All data were pooled by RevMan 5.3 statistical software." This represents a systematic pooling of multiple RCTs with comparison groups, the strongest design available for evaluating vaccine safety and efficacy in children.
The meta-analysis only included six RCTs with participants aged 3-17 years; no data available for children under 3 years or infants; limited information on long-term safety and efficacy; cellular immune response was not further enhanced by booster vaccination.
