The problem
Intervention: School feeding program providing meals to students
Who it was tested with: School-aged children in rural northwestern China (n = 1510).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Data were from two cross-sectional surveys (n = 1510) in northwestern China. T-tests were used to compare the differences in health outcomes of students and their dietary diversity across the different sample years." This represents measurement of the same population indicators across two survey years without a concurrent control group, making it a pre-post design at the population level.
Cross-sectional design without a comparison group limits causal inference. Data from only two time points means the trajectory of change cannot be fully assessed. No information provided on potential confounding variables or whether other factors outside the program may have influenced outcomes.
