The problem
Intervention: School Feeding Programme providing meals to preschool children
Who it was tested with: 208 preschool children in Chikwawa District, Malawi; 3 schools with SFP and 3 without SFP.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A quantitative research with a between-subjects cross-sectional quasi-experimental design comparing three SFP and three non-SFP preschools were sampled through multi-staged stratified random sampling technique." The study compared groups with and without the intervention, but the cross-sectional nature and weak correlations mean evidence is mixed regarding whether the intervention meaningfully improves outcomes.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; correlations are weak to marginal; potential confounding variables not measured; limited to two outcomes only
