The problem
Intervention: Ghana School Feeding Programme providing meals to children in government public schools
Who it was tested with: School children aged 3-20 years from poor and vulnerable households attending government public schools in Ghana.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using a mixed methods approach, this study examines how school feeding and home environment factors influence learning outcomes of public school children in Ghana. Quantitative data for the study was obtained from a randomized controlled evaluation conducted during the period 2012-2016...The difference-in-difference with covariates model was adopted to determine the association between school feeding, home environment factors and then learning outcomes." The study used a quasi-experimental design with comparison groups and controlled for multiple confounding factors to isolate programme effects on specific learning outcomes.
Study does not provide specific effect sizes; qualitative findings indicate weak programme coordination affecting resource provision; results are specific to Ghana and may not generalize to other contexts.
