The problem
Intervention: Measles vaccination (documented vaccination status in children aged 9-59 months)
Who it was tested with: Children aged 9-59 months in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted a nationwide test-negative case-control study using laboratory-based surveillance. Data was collected between January 2020 and December 2023 across 25 provinces... Multivariable logistic regression was performed adjusted for age (months), sex, year of diagnosis, and province of residence." This is a quasi-experimental design comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated populations with appropriate statistical adjustment for confounders, meeting the standard for experimental tier evidence.
The moderate vaccine effectiveness observed may reflect not only vaccine performance but also operational gaps in vaccination delivery, program implementation, and cold chain management. The low vaccination coverage and geographic variation suggest results may not be uniformly applicable across all settings.
