The problem
Intervention: Measles-rubella vaccination
Who it was tested with: Children aged 9-17 months and school-aged children in Kabulasoke Subcounty, Gomba District, Uganda.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We compared exposures of 80 case-patients with 160 age- and sex-matched controls... VE was calculated as (1-aOR)*100%, using conditional logistic regression." This is a case-control design with a comparison group, meeting the criteria for an experimental design with epidemiological methods to estimate vaccine effectiveness.
Only 5 of 106 cases were laboratory-confirmed, limiting diagnostic certainty. The study was conducted during an active outbreak, which may have affected recall of exposures. Sociocultural analysis was based on only 15 interviews.
