The problem
Intervention: Implicit - the study does not evaluate an intervention but rather examines the mechanisms of intergenerational transmission; implications point to mental health support for mothers
Who it was tested with: 832 mothers and their children from pregnancy to age 10 in the Netherlands.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Structural equation modeling was used to test the direct and indirect effects." The study uses longitudinal observational data with multiple measurement points to test pathways of intergenerational transmission, qualifying as an experimental design with sufficient complexity to examine mechanisms.
This is an observational longitudinal study with no intervention comparison group. Causality cannot be definitively established. Reliance on self-report measures for maltreatment and psychopathology may introduce bias.
