The problem
Intervention: Catch-up vaccination offered to children with special healthcare needs who had missed or delayed doses
Who it was tested with: Chinese children with special healthcare needs including neonatal/perinatal disorders, neurological conditions, infectious diseases, hematological diseases, and immune disorders.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We conducted a retrospective cohort study linking electronic medical records, vaccination records, and a structured telephone and questionnaire follow-up" and "assessed catch-up completion at follow-up." This describes a before-after measurement of the same population without a comparison group, with completion rates measured at follow-up after catch-up vaccination was offered.
The study did not employ a comparison group receiving standard care versus catch-up vaccination intervention. Reasons for non-completion of catch-up were identified as caregiver concerns and provider hesitancy, but the mechanisms and effectiveness of addressing these barriers were not experimentally tested.
