The problem
Intervention: High-quality early childhood education program
Who it was tested with: Children who participated in an early childhood education program, followed to midlife.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The follow-up incorporated a full epidemiological exam" combined with "microsimulation using nonexperimental data," providing experimental evidence of midlife health outcomes that was then projected across the lifespan using simulation methods to estimate intervention effects on long-term health and mortality.
Study uses forecasting methods rather than observing actual full life-cycle outcomes; generalizable only to similar high-quality programs; sex-based differences in benefits require further investigation
