The problem
Intervention: Examination of associations between parental, peer, and teacher support and children's moderate and vigorous physical activity
Who it was tested with: Children aged 9-12 years and one of their parents from the European DE-PASS project.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Waist-worn accelerometry was used to assess MPA and VPA. Perceived parental, peer, and teacher support were measured using validated questionnaires. Intensity-specific associations between parent and child physical activity and between interpersonal support variables and children's activity were examined." The study used objective measurement of physical activity and validated instruments to examine associations between social support and children's activity at different intensities, though the cross-sectional design limits causal inference.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Limited statistical significance in key findings (parental support association did not survive multiple testing correction). Findings based on European data may not generalise to other regions.
