The problem
Intervention: Parental support for physical activity including direct support (participating together, encouragement) and indirect support (transportation, financial support, creating opportunities)
Who it was tested with: 246 schoolchildren aged 9-19 from three Chilean cities.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"A cross-sectional study was conducted with 246 schoolchildren (ages 9-19) from three cities. PA was assessed via the YAP questionnaire, while parental support was measured through a 5-item scale. Logistic regression models identified associations with meeting PA guidelines." The study identifies associations between specific parental behaviours and physical activity compliance but cannot determine causality, requiring longitudinal follow-up as the authors acknowledge.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; direction of association unclear; parental support measured through parent report; study cannot explain differential effects by parent gender.
