The problem
Intervention: Introduction of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine at childhood immunisation programs (DTP3 coverage levels) combined with long-lasting insecticidal nets
Who it was tested with: Children under five in Benin.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A compartmental mathematical model was developed to estimate clinical and severe malaria cases averted in children under five with the primary series of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in Benin. Over a period of 10 years, scenarios involving vaccine introduction at different coverage levels alongside the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets were modelled to assess the impact." The model projects impact under multiple scenarios but is based on theoretical projections rather than real-world trial data.
This is a modelling study using mathematical projections rather than empirical implementation data. Results depend on model assumptions about vaccine efficacy, coverage rates, transmission dynamics, and behavioural responses to vaccine introduction. The study does not provide actual implementation outcomes.
