The problem
Intervention: Introduction of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine into the national Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI) for children aged 6-24 months
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-24 months in Foumbot and Foumban health districts, Western Cameroon.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This was a community-based, descriptive cross-sectional study targeting children aged 6-24 months and caregivers, selected by stratified random cluster sampling in Foumbot and Foumban health districts. Data were collected from caregivers by trained and supervised enumerators using a pretested questionnaire administered face-to-face." The study measures vaccine coverage and completeness as primary outcomes, but finds that uptake levels are insufficient for the vaccine to have meaningful population-level impact on malaria prevention.
Study is descriptive cross-sectional without a comparison group; data collected at a single time point one year after introduction in only two districts; no evaluation of actual health outcomes or impact on malaria morbidity; relies on caregiver recall and perception.
