The problem
Intervention: Integration of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine into routine immunisation services
Who it was tested with: Children in western Kenya in areas with moderate-to-high malaria transmission.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted 112 in-depth interviews with 60 participants (25 health-care providers, 27 managers, and eight policy makers)" and "observations of practices and processes of malaria vaccine delivery" using "an iterative approach" across three timepoints. This longitudinal qualitative approach captured implementation experiences and perspectives but lacked quantitative measurement of programme outcomes.
The study was conducted during a pilot phase with concurrent evaluation and temporary adaptations, which may not reflect full routine integration. No quantitative outcome data on vaccine coverage rates or malaria incidence were provided.
