The problem
Intervention: Two group-based parent training programmes: ACT Raising Safe Kids (9 weeks) to reduce harsh parenting and improve positive practices, and Dialogic Book-Sharing (8 weeks) to promote parental sensitivity and child cognitive development
Who it was tested with: High-risk families in Southern Brazil; 123 mothers allocated to ACT and 124 mothers allocated to DBS.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The programmes were offered to high-risk families enrolled in a randomized controlled trial study called PIÁ in Southern Brazil." The study randomly assigned mothers to interventions and measured completion as the primary outcome, meeting the criteria for an experimental design with a comparison structure, though the focus is on engagement rather than child outcomes.
The study measures attendance and completion but not child outcomes or actual changes in parenting practices or child development. Reasons for non-completion and specific practical difficulties are not detailed.
