The problem
Intervention: COVID-19 pandemic and its socioeconomic impacts (household income loss)
Who it was tested with: Adolescent women aged 15-19 years in Kenya (n=1,893) and Burkina Faso (n=1,422).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We performed a secondary analysis using nationally representative longitudinal data from Kenya and Burkina Faso, collected at three time points (pre-COVID-19 in late 2019, and during COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021), to determine the extent to which SRH outcomes and behaviors... changed during the pandemic." This panel study design with baseline and follow-up measurements allows comparison of outcomes before and during the pandemic across both countries.
Secondary data analysis with limited ability to establish causality; panel attrition not reported; outcomes measured only through 2021; unmeasured confounders may explain observed associations.
