The problem
Intervention: Maternal continuum of care comprising antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal care
Who it was tested with: Children from nationally representative samples in Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys 2017-18 and 2022.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate survey-specific and pooled associations" between maternal continuum of care utilization and childhood undernutrition indicators. The study examined associations across two nationally representative time points to assess whether effects changed over time.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Results are observational associations that may reflect confounding factors. The lack of effect on stunting suggests other factors beyond maternal care services are needed to address chronic child malnutrition.
