The problem
Intervention: Continuum of maternal healthcare (adequate antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal care within 48 hours)
Who it was tested with: 37,351 births in Nigeria, Mali, DRC, Kenya, and Lesotho from DHS-8 surveys (2022-2024).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
[tier lowered: the text shows no comparison-group design] "After adjustment for wealth, education, residence, parity, maternal age, child sex, and country, the association was substantially attenuated and non-significant" - this shows a quasi-experimental design comparing groups with statistical adjustment, but no randomisation, fitting the EXPERIMENTAL tier as a comparison-based observational study.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation, and residual confounding from unmeasured factors affecting both care access and survival is possible.
