The problem
Intervention: Standard childhood immunization programs delivering BCG, hepatitis B, polio, pentavalent, and measles vaccines
Who it was tested with: Newborns and young children in Cambodia, Madagascar, and Senegal (n=3,606).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"vaccine coverage was estimated for BCG, hepatitis B, oral polio, pentavalent... and measles vaccines. Risk factor analysis was performed with logistic regression models to identify correlates of incomplete vaccination." The study tracked real-world immunization outcomes in a large cohort and identified both the extent of the coverage gap and demographic risk factors, providing evidence that current programs are not meeting WHO targets.
The study measures coverage outcomes but does not test an intervention designed to improve vaccination rates; it is observational rather than interventional. The analysis identifies risk factors but does not evaluate solutions.
