The problem
Intervention: Positive parenting intervention delivered to families of preschool-aged children
Who it was tested with: 74 preschool-aged children (mean age 36 months), predominantly Latino, with 35 in intervention group and 39 in services-as-usual control group.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial, DNAm-derived body mass index (BMI) and anthropometric BMI were assessed at baseline and 12-month follow-up." The study employed a rigorous experimental design with random assignment to intervention or control groups and prospective follow-up measurement, meeting criteria for the highest evidence tier.
Small sample size; secondary analysis; mechanism of effect unclear as improved parenting practices did not mediate the observed epigenetic changes; anthropometric outcomes did not change, limiting clinical interpretability
