The problem
Intervention: Identification of predictive factors for stunting including maternal education, dietary intake (milk, meat, calcium), feeding practices, developmental history, and morbidity history
Who it was tested with: 300 children aged 2-8 years in Egypt (148 stunted cases, 152 non-stunted controls) attending the National Nutrition Institute.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A case control study was conducted at the National Nutrition Institute, Egypt. The study recruited 300 children aged 2-8 years, 148 stunted children as cases and 152 non-stunted as control." This design identifies associations between factors and stunting status but cannot definitively establish which factors cause stunting or whether interventions addressing these factors would reduce stunting.
Case-control design limits causal inference; study population from a nutrition institute may not represent broader Egyptian population; cross-sectional associations cannot establish temporal relationships or causation.
