The problem
Intervention: Integrated early childhood development services combined with PMTCT programs, including WHO/UNICEF Care for Child Development (CCD) education and counseling sessions delivered during routine PMTCT visits
Who it was tested with: HIV-positive mothers and their infants aged 1.5-24 months in Malawi.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"From June-July 2019, we conducted in-depth interviews with 29 mothers enrolled in the intervention for ≥6 months across 4 health facilities. The interview guide focused on perceived impact of the intervention on mothers' ECD and PMTCT practices, including barriers and facilitators, and unmet needs related to the program. Data were coded and analyzed using constant comparison methods." This represents a qualitative practitioner-level evidence design that documents mothers' experiences and perceived benefits rather than measuring clinical or developmental outcomes through experimental or quasi-experimental methods.
Qualitative design without comparison group or objective outcome measures; selection bias as only mothers retained in program for ≥6 months were interviewed; perceived developmental milestone achievement not validated against objective assessments.
